after sunday's big bike ride to maja's parents house (also maja's dad made the pear pie/cake thing so oops! false info in the blog i wrote about it) i was pretty darn sore... my knees were the worst feeling but it was nice to know i'd gotten out and had a nice bike ride... especially before the week of grey...
i was warned about how denmark just stays grey for weeks and i'm beginning to understand... it isn't really dark outside just a weird grey, you aren't able to pinpoint the sun or when it sets or rises it just becomes more possible to see farther during points in the sun's rotation in the sky... it isn't driving me crazy but it does make it very damp and cold for someone who is used to dry cold it is just so weird... i find it colder even though wyoming just got hit with feet of snow i think sometimes that i'd feel less cold standing out in the snow than standing outside here... just a weird feeling... but i'm very grateful that it hasn't snowed here yet... i don't want to ride my bike in that mess as long as possible!
i liked this last week a whole bunch because denmark switched their clocks the weekend before to jump out of daylight savings... so i was a whole time zone closer to the people i wanted to talk to... it was small but oh so nice!
on wed krista, cameron and i went to international kareoke night... that will never happen again... while singing with a group of girls someone tiped the d.j. that i was a "opera singer back home"... love that... NOT! so the d.j. forced me to sing something classical... it was horrible and will never happen again... but it did make kirsta and cameron happy because they had wanted to hear me sing... oh well.. i'll take one for the team and look like an idiot... haha.
on friday we went on a field trip too... to the h.c. andersen museum and the odense cathedral.
it was cool to see everything... h.c. was one weird guy... he wrote such stories as the little mermaid (the disney version took his story and made it happy... it really isn't happy), and the ugly ducking (he thought of himself as an ugly duck)... however he was a very unattractive man... and this description of the cathedral says it all... thanks odense.dk
The Cathedral, St. Knuds, was built in the 1300s. It is a Gothic cathedral with a bright, high nave. Many consider this to be the finest Gothic building in Denmark. It is named after the king Canute the Holy, who was murdered here in 1086. His bones are on display in the crypt. King Hans and Christian II are also buried in Odense Cathedral. The magnificent altarpiece dating from the 1500s and carved by Claus Berg is well worth examining in detail. |
also on friday it was a big night for denmark... a special day named "j-day"... it is the release of the danish christmas (or Jul) beers for the season! it is not the best day for hospitals because the alcohol content in the beer is higher... there are usually two colors even for various brands... there is a red one and a blue one... at the bar downstairs they had the albani brand and it was quite bitter... the red one (only 5.5%) was much better tasting than the blue one (7%)... and yeah i tried both becuase it was after all a big "holliday!"... haha! it was fun but i was still back in bed by 1:30 so a good night...
saturday was halloween... i've discovered that it is a mostly american holiday that can be celebrated in other countries but not even slightly like in the u.s.... there were some people dressed up but children really don't go out except if they are very little and bjorg told me that the kids get coins rather than candy anyways...
but leah, cameron, krista and i made up our own halloween fun!!! krista and i had boughten a pumpkin (named penelope i might add) on thursday and cameron had found a package with a table cloth, confettii, plates, cups, napkins and straws in it! she also had gotten a package from home with cute pumpkin lights and fake spider webs!
we ended up eating food... bobbing for apples (and a pear)... carving a pumpkin,... watching an episode of 'are you afraid of the dark'... roasting pumpkin seeds and then finally making masks out of animal paper plates! :D at one point in the night a guy from taiwan who is in our classes came in to the kitchen... we showed him how great all of those activities could be! :)
finally yesterday (sunday) i stayed in bed most of the day... i watched gone with the wind and followed my best friend though the streets of nyc as he ran the marathon! it was sooo cool that i could watch this little dot run along the course... i also tried to watch the coverage of the marathon some but they only showed the elite runners... i wish i had been there to meet him at the finish line but right now i'm ment to be here... at least till january...
that night 10 people from my floor got together and did a potluck dinner... it was crazy fun being from different nationalities... i ate tooo much food but it was fun to talk and enjoy dinner with a different crowd...
well speaking of dinner i better get some grub before choir tonight... :)
